The prevalence of Kidney Disease has increased alarmingly in the recent past, with
over ten lakh patients suffering from End Stage Kidney Disease requiring Dialysis,
and a further two lakh patients added every year who require regular Dialysis.
Even more distressing is the fact that less than 20% of the patients who require
Dialysis actually get to have it, due to financial constraints.
With facilities available across the Country, many patients are undergoing
Dialysis and leading near normal lives, including holding jobs as Engineers,
Clerks, Doctors, etc. In fact, Dialysis patients can live long and enjoy a good
quality of life with regular Dialysis, appropriate nutrition, and regular medication
to control diabetes and hypertension. They also need regular medication for
maintaining blood levels (hemoglobin), calcium and phosphorous levels in the
blood.
Another urgent requirement for End Stage Kidney Disease patients is a forum
where they can interact with each other and learn about various interventions
which can improve their health while on Dialysis. To meet this need, Care For
Your Kidney Foundation (CFYKF) and Star Kidney Center have come together to
launch The Hyderabad Dialysis Club. Under the auspices of this Club patients on
Dialysis in any unit of Hyderabad can meet on a monthly basis and interact with
other patients/ Doctors/Dieticians, etc.
Star Kidney Center has become an active center for Dialysis and Kidney
Transplantation in the past year, consistently performing over 1300 Dialysis per
month and completing about 30 Kidney Transplants. Recently the team at Star
performed a breakthrough procedure - Dual Kidney Transplantation, wherein two
kidneys from a cadaver donor were transplanted into a single recipient. This is a
very rare and difficult surgery performed in the city of Hyderabad only once in the
past. The patient is doing well now, he is off Dialysis, and having normal kidney
function.
